Germany gay marriage approved by MPs in snap vote A clear majority of German MPs have voted to legalise same-sex marriage, days after Chancellor Angela Merkel dropped her opposition to a vote. The reform grants couples now limited to civil unions full marital rights, and allows them to adopt children. Mrs Merkel's political opponents were strongly in favour. But the chancellor, who signalled her backing for a free vote only on Monday, voted against. The bill was backed by 393 lawmakers, 226 voted against and four abstained. The German legal code will now read: "Marriage is entered into for life by two people of different or the same sex", AFP news agency reported Following Friday's vote, Mrs Merkel said that for her marriage was between a man and a woman. But she said she hoped the passing of the bill would lead to more "social cohesion and peace". How did this sudden vote come about? Modi finally speaks out against lynchings of ‘beef eaters’

Image
Modi finally speaks out against lynchings of ‘beef eaters’ Prime Minister Narendra Modi broke his silence Thursday and delivered a speech condemning a recent spate of lynchings in India. Hours later, a news alert announced that yet another man had been killed by a mob for carrying beef. This was the second beef-related lynching in a week, and one of many since Modi came to power in 2014. His Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has strong links to a number of far-right Hindu organizations, has been widely criticized for allowing such attacks to continue with little impunity. The violence happens in the name of protecting cows, which Hindus consider sacred. Taking the podium in Ahmedabad on Thursday, Modi said, “Today, when I hear that someone is killed in the name of a cow — whether he is innocent or guilty is something the law will decide — no person has the right to take the law into his own hands. I appeal to the people of the country: Violence is ...

A sip of coffee might be dangerous these days, especially if you are in the United Kingdom.  BBC consumer-affairs program, Watchdog, discovered that the three biggest coffee chains in the UK, Starbucks, Costa and Caffe Nero, were found to contain bacteria from feces in ice they used for cold drinks. For Starbucks and Caffe Nero, three out of 10 samples of collected ice were contaminated by fecal bacteria, and the result for Costa was seven out of 10, according to the investigation.   Tony Lewis, head of policy at the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, told the BBC that the amount of bacteria found at these coffee giants was "concerning" and these types of bacteria can cause disease in humans. “It is extremely important to us that all our stores operate to high standards of hygiene at all times, and we take it very seriously when any store fails to meet these standards,” a spokesperson of Costa said in a statement to MarketWatch.  “We ado...
