At Least 15 Dead, 113 Missing in Eastern Uganda Landslides: A Tragedy Unfolds

Eastern Uganda is reeling from a devastating natural disaster that has claimed at least 15 lives and left 113 people missing. The landslides, triggered by torrential rains, occurred in the remote Bulambuli and Sironko districts near Mount Elgon, an area known for its steep terrain and vulnerability to such calamities.

In the early hours of November 28, 2024, heavy rainfall caused massive soil erosion, leading to landslides that buried homes, farms, and roads. Entire villages were swept away, leaving residents scrambling for safety. Many survivors described hearing the roar of the sliding earth and the frantic cries of those trapped under the debris.

Local officials have confirmed that 15 bodies have been recovered so far, but the death toll is expected to rise as search and rescue operations continue. Unfortunately, the remoteness of the affected areas and blocked roads are hampering relief efforts. Over 113 people remain unaccounted for, sparking fears that many may still be buried under the rubble.

2. Invest in Early Warning Systems: Deploy technologies to monitor rainfall and soil movement to provide timely alerts.

3. Promote Reforestation and Soil Conservation: Restore forest cover and introduce sustainable farming methods to reduce erosion.

4. Increase Funding for Disaster Preparedness: Equip local governments with the resources needed to respond effectively to such crises.

While the immediate priority is rescuing survivors and providing relief, the global community must also recognize its role in combating climate change. The increasing frequency of extreme weather events demands collective action to mitigate its impacts on vulnerable populations.

The landslides in eastern Uganda are a heartbreaking reminder of nature’s destructive power and the urgency of addressing the factors that make such disasters more frequent and severe.
